The new $130 million Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Brain Sciences (ELSC) is being established through a lead donation of $50 million from the Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation. According to Mrs. Safra, the new center will bring “new hope to families around the world suffering from Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other devastating brain diseases.”

Focus: Five Brain Research Fields

The center will focus on five different fields of brain research: The first on genes, molecules and nerve cells in the brain; the second on research of structure and function of local neuronal circuits; the third on research of electrical activity and the communication between brain areas; the fourth will research cognitive processes; and the fifth will focus on theoretical areas, computational aspects and building models of the nervous system, and new experiments.

New Medical Approaches and Technologies

Prof. Menachem Magidor, President of the Hebrew University, commented on the initiative saying, “Thanks to the leadership of the Edmond J. Safra Philanthropic Foundation, the university will be able to help solve one of the key scientific questions of the Twenty-first century - how the human brain works - by discovering new medical approaches for treating neurological disorders and applying new technologies that imitate the activity of the human brain.”

Established in 1925, The Hebrew University’s First Board of Governors included Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud and Chaim Weizmann.
